I'm putting out a call for folks who might want to donate some time to an amazing project.
You can hear the demo here www.burningopera.com <http://www.burningopera.com>
This is a link to more of the recorded music http://www.thereallybig.com/how%20to%20survive%20the%20apocalypse/

Here's the full story on this piece.

A guy named Mark Nichols, a brilliant composer and Erik Davis, a brilliant writer got together with some talented folks and created this piece.
They have about 20 minutes written and recorded. Mark is planning on writing 10 more songs. It's dark, it's freakish, it spans all genres, it is beautiful and haunting. It will be a theatrical stage play. The long term goal is to tour it in a much larger community involved type road show.
This piece "How to survive the Apocalypse" being the main attraction.

At the moment there is no budget for this. I am donating my time producing and my theatre for auditions, rehearsals and 2 nights in January to stage
the 20 minutes they have written. Our hope in staging this is to gather more interest, performers, perhaps investors, and basically see how it looks and sounds on stage.

I'll post the audition/rehearsal/show schedule below.

This is what Mark Nichols is looking for and some of the roles:

:::::As far as band, we're looking for volunteers who really like the music and can see themselves in the band. I'd like them to audition along with the actors. Looking for people who are comfortable with an audience and who've played a lot of theater. Looking for players with a great sense (and LOVE) of dynamics. Generally a theater band has to play more quietly and intensely than they're used to and make it full. Would appreciate people who are very comfortable with funk and breakbeat. Listen to the demo at www.burningopera.com <http://www.burningopera.com>
and see if it is what you want to be doing. Must be prepared for theatrix. If you're interested in assistant music directing and conducting the shows please say so now.::::

As far as cast, singing is highest priority and good harmony singing at that. Looking for freaks and talented actor/movers/people who can connect honestly. Looking for voices that make people jealous.

Jean Geanie: a drag queen must be able to sing harmony
A young dude who will play the young dude , Bud "It's time to party..." A good singer/dancer good look, versitle, maybe plays an instrument
A bass or baritone who can play the 'Mustachio' part. He's a provacateur. Maybe a puppeteer, mime or clown. Anarchist.
Another woman chorus, good look, hopefully sings harmony great and can play a band instrument or strings, or can do Bulgarian Women's choir style or opera.
Bass Player
Theatrical drummer, (this is someone who can play with bundled stick or brushes and has excellent sense of dynamics)
Keyboard/DJ type (good musician and computer geek) plays Djembe also
Video op
Guitar
Maybe some horns or strings (violin or viola)

We're also looking for:
Costumers
Stage Managers
Light Tech
Sound Tech
Set designers
Production Assistant
Assistant Director
Promotions
Investors

If this interests you at all please get a hold of myself (ty@stagewerx.org) or mark at mn@thereallybig.com

Auditions (tentative) Saturday Nov 7th 2p-5p Sunday Nov 8th 2p-5p

Hello Friends, please forward this to your friends,
WE...my shiney star 3-yr-old, my wacky partner, and me... are seeking a house or *warehouse* to call home. We'd prefer to stay in San Francisco, but Oakland could be ok if it's the right place. We have to be out of our current situation at the end of April. We will share space with another(s), as long as they are very kid-friendly and of similar lifestyle. We require the following: at least one private & quiet room for us, a washer/dryer or hookups, a bathtub, a bit of storage, and access to an outdoor space. These are the essentials...beyond that are the bonuses. Ideally, we are seeking space to live AND work, play music, make art. A garden would be awesome. A functional kitchen is a big plus, and we woulkdn't mind a parking spot. Again, we're open to community space in the right environment, so if you have a sweet space, let me know asap.

We have seen several GREAT houses that we'd like to share with the right individual(s)...just getting the logistics all together this weekend. When (yes!) we get such a house, we will need a housemate soon afterwards (5/15 to 6/1). I'd love to hear from any of you who think this would work out for your needs. You must be open-minded, very kid-friendly, into live music and art, eccentric/creative/have something to share, have a sense of humor and really decent communication, and enjoy playing dressup. Be forthcoming and straight-up with your needs. You are happy with noise (music, singing, drumming, laughter, little feet running around) but are willing to be pretty quiet at night. We'd like to live with a woman to balance the house, but that's flexible. A couple could be ok, and another child could be an asset. Please write to me if you are interested. Share your story and we can meet up very soon. Thanks.
Blessings to all.

The link above is a new report analyzing the economic implications of water use for the Smoke Creek Desert hydrological basin. It basically demonstrates that water is more valuable as a resource for the growing communities near Reno. This is still a controversial issue since there are some people who would not want ANY water exported, but it seems to me that RESPONSIBLE expolitation of a resource in the state for the benefit of the state is a balanced development, vs. removing water to meet growing out-of-state electricity demands which can be fulfilled through other means.

WHATEVER development, the first step to ensuring that water use is fair and balanced is an ADJUDICATION of water rights in the Smoke Creek basin. This would basically be an audit of water supplies by the State water engineer, Hugh Ricci, and would reveal that the water rights which Sempra is claiming are highly dubious.

Please write a letter to Washoe County Commission Chair Bonnie Weber, strongly urging her to request an adjudication to the State water engineer
in regards to Sempra Energy’s claimed water rights for the proposed coal-fired
power plant near Gerlach. See below for the official call for action from the Nevada Clean Energy Coalition.

Dear Nevada Clean Energy Supporter,

Of the many dangers the proposed Sempra coal-fired plant would have on Washoe County, one of the most important is the danger of losing our precious water resources- specifically those in the Smoke Creek Desert.

We can prevent Sempra from taking away this valuable resource by contacting
Washoe County Commissioners and asking them to request a water adjudication from the State water engineer. This request will make a state engineer look at the water rights Sempra is claiming and compare them to other water rights in the Smoke Creek basin. We strongly believe the water rights Sempra are claiming are bogus, we need officials to see this too.

This is a CRITICAL ACTION AGAINST SEMPRA. Without a vast amount of water
Sempra will not be able to operate the plant. Our water should be kept in Nevada and Washoe County, our wildlife and our community will all benefit from this adjudication.

For a direct link to the Washoe County Commissioner’s contact information
visit the Take Action page at
http://www.nevadacleanenergy.org/takeaction.html

...or the Washoe County website at:
http://www.co.washoe.nv.us/bcc/bios.html~color=grey&text_version=

If you like you can copy the message below and paste into your email for
your County Commissioner, or if you live outside of the County, to the Chair, Commissioner Bonnie Weber (BWeber@washoecounty.us):

Dear Commissioner-
I am strongly urging you to request an adjudication to the State water engineer
in regards to Sempra Energy’s claimed water rights for the proposed coal-fired
power plant near Gerlach. Washoe County’s water supply is a very precious
commodity which both the local community and indigenous wildlife cannot afford to lose in favor of energy production for California.
Thank you.

Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have shaken the very foundations of New Orleans and the nation...

Though I live in the Bay Area, and it's been rumored that we may eventually fall into the Pacific Ocean or be blown off the map by a North Korean 'nucular', or rather, excuse me, nuclear warhead, it's truly difficult to imagine such a thing happening to any of us. Nonetheless, when hundreds of thousands of people are out of a home, a job, a lifestyle, a life, family members and friends, not knowing what the next day has in store, there's no comprehending how emotionally distraught these people must collectively feel.

In light of this, we must not dismiss the fact that the silver-spooned bubble boy George W. Bush, his immoral cabinet of puppeteers, and all of his amoral corporate buddies are greatly to blame for this happening and its aftermath. As with the war in Iraq and the attacks on the twin towers, these events were long ago foreseen. And with the foresight that was made available, these events could have been prevented, or at least the destruction and loss of life could have been minimized with a contingency plan in place.

With regard to Bush's past actions and present inactions, why was Hurricane Katrina so much more devastating than it need be?

(1) Over the past year George W. Bush sent a significant percentage (I believe over 50%) of our National Guard to join the regular military in fighting an oil war, based on a set of well documented lies, to benefit his wealthy buddies, leaving the "homeland" mostly unattended. (2) A few years ago, the Bush administration "cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war". (3) "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed to study how New Orleans could be protected from a catastrophic hurricane, but the Bush administration ordered that the research not be undertaken". (4) "In early 2001, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a report stating that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S., including a terrorist attack on New York City. But by 2003 the federal funding for the flood control project essentially dried up as it was drained into the Iraq war. (5) In 2004, the Bush administration cut funding requested by the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain by more than 80 percent." (6) "The Bush administration's policy of turning over wetlands to developers almost certainly also contributed to the heightened level of the storm surge." (note - the statements in quotes are borrowed from Sidney Blumenthal's article below, originally published in the magazine Spiegel titled, "No One Can Say they Didn't See it Coming")

Anyhow, It took three to four days after Hurricane Katrina before assistance arrived to New Orleans in any noticible form, then on Friday, five days after Hurricane Katrina, what was to be a flight to survey New Orleans from the air in Airforce One turned into Bush making a brief press photo appearance at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner, fifteen miles from New Orleans. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of New Orleanians, most of whom were poor and black, and many who were old and infirmed, or very young, were going on their fifth day without the basic necessities for survival, scraping for their very lives as they struggled to maintain their sanity. It was a travesty, because, to my knowledge, there weren't even any efforts to drop fresh water, food, blankets, medical supplies, and perhaps a couple hundred Port-a-Johns at the Superdome and convention center.

Now maybe this is just my curiosity getting the best of me, but I wonder what might have been the response if the people standing outside the Superdome and the Convention Center were white, middle and upper classed Christian folk? And I also can't help wonder what the response would have been if this were a terrorist attack on New Orleans? Wouldn't blowing up one of the levees have been a pretty good target for terrorists? And what of the billions of dollars that were supposedly funneled into local and regional agencies to deal with such an emergency?

How many tragedies must happen and high crimes need be committed before the American People understand that George W. Bush doesn't have the best interests of the People who he supposedly leads and serves. In my estimation, he only has the interests of acquiring resources, wealth, and power for his megalomaniacal friends and of inflating his ego. And he is more than simply unfit to lead, he is truly a terrible leader, and most certainly a dangerous representative to the ideas set forth in our Constitution and Bill of Rights: ideals that he repeatedly proselytizes, using the words 'freedom' and 'Democracy' in the form of repetitive and simplistic soundbites to justify his position to the rest of the world.

He, the neo-Conservatives, and increasingly much of America have confused Democracy with Laissez Faire Capitalism. To further provide a means to their power grabbing ends, his administration has created a new enemy to fill the vacant space left behind by the Soviets, yet making our nation even more fearful by declaring war on the noun "Terrorism", which is for all practical purposes impossible, and signals a never ending war. With regard to Katrina and knowing George's propensity for saying and doing dumb things, it wouldn't surprise me if he now declared Mother Nature - greatly affected by Global Warming, a direct product of our irresponsibility - a terrorist...

After a semblance of peace is restored to the devastated deep South, it is my opinion that George W. Bush should be impeached. This impeachment would be on the grounds that he has clearly proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he is an inept and irresponsible leader. And being that he and many of his cohorts have committed high crimes, they should then be tried by an independent court as criminals and enemies of the American People. For has it not been well documented in the mainstream media that his administration has lied, deceived, misappropriated public funds, tortured prisoners, and perpetrated conscious conflicts of interest in an official capacity (ie. ignoring seperations of Church and State, participating in illicit dealings and price gouging with corporations such as Enron) while misrepresenting the American people to the rest of the world and thumbing his nose at our allies on numerous occasions?

And is it not clear that the crimes George W. Bush has committed are infinitely worse than the so-called crimes of former president Clinton: who was caught in an extramarital affair with a consenting adult (possibly a shill), then caught for telling a lie to a question there was never a legitimate reason for asking in the first place? What had this to do with leadership?

After Bush's impeachment, I then ask would it be unreasonable to open an independent investigation as to the elections in 2000 and 2004, where voter fraud is suspected? Then should we perhaps appoint an independent commission to further investigate the many and various unanswered questions with regard to 9-11? Then, should we allow Bush and his officers to be tried, as have many an abusive world leader, by the International Criminal Court system in the Hague, as war criminals and violators of human rights? For isn't it true that many of our own troops and the troops of our allies, along with hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghanis been killed, maimed, or subjugated to inhumane treatment? I'm out of breath, as the list seemingly goes on and on...

For a moment though let me come back to the present... please consider sending donations of money, food, and clothing to reputable non-profits, and consider opening your homes to these refugees, then, after things calm down a bit, if you're able, go to New Orleans to help people restore their homes and their lives... but please, don't forget what has been happening before our very eyes. Because when the drama resulting from Hurricane Katrina is over, many of the fast food eating, short-attention spanned people from middle America and the mainstream public, who aren't directly affected by or involved in this catastrophe, will simply change the channel and go back to their mind numbing daily routine, choosing to forget, because it's just too uncomfortable to consider any real change.

We're at a crossroads, for at this time the People of this nation must either choose to see beyond the veil of lies and mistruths that the corporate media and this administration's propaganda demands we believe, or simply acquiesce and therefore morally and financially bankrupt our nation. Bush and his friends must no longer have their way with our Constitutional rights, our flag, our civil liberties, our public monies, and our defensive forces.

We must choose, with a passion, to impeach George W. Bush and the entirety of the Bush administration, then we must systematically remove the people in high ranking and highly affective areas who he has put in place while declawing the corporate interests that have demonstrated that they have no one's well being in mind except for that of the stock holder.

Thank you for taking a moment to consider this... Please read the following article published in the German magazine, Speigel by Sidney Blumenthal, a former Clinton advisor.

Voice of Eye

---

"No One Can Say they Didn't See it Coming"

In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.

Biblical in its uncontrolled rage and scope, Hurricane Katrina has left millions of Americans to scavenge for food and shelter and hundreds to thousands reportedly dead. With its main levee broken, the evacuated city of New Orleans has become part of the Gulf of Mexico. But the damage wrought by the hurricane may not entirely be the result of an act of nature.

A year ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed to study how New Orleans could be protected from a catastrophic hurricane, but the Bush administration ordered that the research not be undertaken. After a flood killed six people in 1995, Congress created the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, in which the Corps of Engineers strengthened and renovated levees and pumping stations. In early 2001, the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a report stating that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S., including a terrorist attack on New York City. But by 2003 the federal funding for the flood control project essentially dried up as it was drained into the Iraq war. In 2004, the Bush administration cut funding requested by the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain by more than 80 percent. Additional cuts at the beginning of this year (for a total reduction in funding of 44.2 percent since 2001) forced the New Orleans district of the Corps to impose a hiring freeze. The Senate had debated adding funds for fixing New Orleans' levees, but it was too late.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune, which before the hurricane published a series on the federal funding problem, and whose presses are now underwater, reported online: "No one can say they didn't see it coming ... Now in the wake of one of the worst storms ever, serious questions are being asked about the lack of preparation."

The Bush administration's policy of turning over wetlands to developers almost certainly also contributed to the heightened level of the storm surge. In 1990, a federal task force began restoring lost wetlands surrounding New Orleans. Every two miles of wetland between the Crescent City and the Gulf reduces a surge by half a foot. Bush had promised "no net loss" of wetlands, a policy launched by his father's administration and bolstered by President Clinton. But he reversed his approach in 2003, unleashing the developers. The Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency then announced they could no longer protect wetlands unless they were somehow related to interstate commerce.

In response to this potential crisis, four leading environmental groups conducted a joint expert study, concluding in 2004 that without wetlands protection New Orleans could be devastated by an ordinary, much less a Category 4 or 5, hurricane. "There's no way to describe how mindless a policy that is when it comes to wetlands protection," said one of the report's authors. The chairman of the White House's Council on Environmental Quality dismissed the study as "highly questionable," and boasted, "Everybody loves what we're doing."

"My administration's climate change policy will be science based," President Bush declared in June 2001. But in 2002, when the Environmental Protection Agency submitted a study on global warming to the United Nations reflecting its expert research, Bush derided it as "a report put out by a bureaucracy," and excised the climate change assessment from the agency's annual report. The next year, when the EPA issued its first comprehensive "Report on the Environment," stating, "Climate change has global consequences for human health and the environment," the White House simply demanded removal of the line and all similar conclusions. At the G-8 meeting in Scotland this year, Bush successfully stymied any common action on global warming. Scientists, meanwhile, have continued to accumulate impressive data on the rising temperature of the oceans, which has produced more severe hurricanes.

In February 2004, 60 of the nation's leading scientists, including 20 Nobel laureates, warned in a statement, "Restoring Scientific Integrity in Policymaking": "Successful application of science has played a large part in the policies that have made the United States of America the world's most powerful nation and its citizens increasingly prosperous and healthy ... Indeed, this principle has long been adhered to by presidents and administrations of both parties in forming and implementing policies. The administration of George W. Bush has, however, disregarded this principle ... The distortion of scientific knowledge for partisan political ends must cease." Bush completely ignored this statement.

In the two weeks preceding the storm in the Gulf, the trumping of science by ideology and expertise by special interests accelerated. The Federal Drug Administration announced that it was postponing sale of the morning-after contraceptive pill, despite overwhelming scientific evidence of its safety and its approval by the FDA's scientific advisory board. The United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa accused the Bush administration of responsibility for a condom shortage in Uganda -- the result of the administration's evangelical Christian agenda of "abstinence." When the chief of the Bureau of Justice Statistics in the Justice Department was ordered by the White House to delete its study that African-Americans and other minorities are subject to racial profiling in police traffic stops and he refused to buckle under, he was forced out of his job. When the Army Corps of Engineers' chief contracting oversight analyst objected to a $7 billion no-bid contract awarded for work in Iraq to Halliburton (the firm at which Vice President Cheney was formerly CEO), she was demoted despite her superior professional ratings. At the National Park Service, a former Cheney aide, a political appointee lacking professional background, drew up a plan to overturn past environmental practices and prohibit any mention of evolution while allowing sale of religious materials through the Park Service.

On the day the levees burst in New Orleans, Bush delivered a speech in Colorado comparing the Iraq war to World War II and himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt: "And he knew that the best way to bring peace and stability to the region was by bringing freedom to Japan." Bush had boarded his very own "Streetcar Named Desire."

Sidney Blumenthal, a former assistant and senior advisor to President Clinton and the author of "The Clinton Wars," is writing a column for Salon and the Guardian of London.

It's a drag... In case you haven't received the news via email - the gory details are as follows and at http://www.burninbush.org:

[Burnin'Bush] Update: This year's Permit; BLM & Black Rock Politics

This summer's BB festivities MAY BE CANCELED due to BLM Red Tape & Black Rock Politics —

The Bureau of Land MANagement is requiring Burnin'Bush to pay $6700 up front in "Recovery Costs" in lue of $4/per person per day for a Special Recreation Permit. BB is also now required to purchase liability insurance for all attendees while on public land for 2-3 days. Icing on the cake - we have been informed that Law Enforcement will also be ever-present, and include federal, state, and county levels.

Not only is this absurd, we absolutely CAN NOT afford such ridiculous costs for a weekend of our family and friends camping, making art, and metal banging in the desert! Last year Burnin'Bush brought in approximately $2,000 in donations and still BB didn’t pay for itself.

Thus far, we have been very cooperative with the BLM - We provided them with the Operating Plan they requested, and have met several times to discuss the possibility of having the permit fees waived due to the fact that we are a Not For Profit educational group/happening - All to no avail.

The restrictions being imposed by the BLM contradict all that BB stands for on this lovely patriotic holiday. What has happened to celebrating freely in the land of the free? Bureaucratic Bullshit... The BLM has also admitted the obvious, this is the trickle down effect of BM POLITICS on the Black Rock Desert. No matter what size a gathering, entertainment on any level in this area has to pass the approval of the public, and [specifically] the Burning Man organizers — see the Red Tape Letters link on the BB website.

Next step? We either comply (and charge everyone in advance) or find a new place! We're not interested in going into the festival business, we just want to inspire with fire, eat hot dogs, make art, and keep Burnin'Bush FREE! Any leads to a possible private locale would be appreciated - please contact topazrose@burninbush.org
Thank you.

voting continues, now until tuesday. the jrs announced the end day as tuesday, not this saturday, so we have gladly gone with this error. voting is proving to be fun. we encourage you to vote early and often (though we have the technology to catch you if you do . . .). you can see the real time results here: http://www.aumond.com/publicResults.jsp?election=5. info on the voting is at http://borg2.tribe.net.

what i'm finding interesting is which projects the voting is selecting. ones of clear merit are being selected, along lines similar to what the internal borg1 process would likely pick. but what is really interesting is that the ones rising to the top are the ones that have made a biggest scene in public and have lots of people and excitement around them.

i find this a feature, not a bug. in the burning man amateur hour special olympics of art, lots of people and lots of excitement are as big of predictor of success as nearly any assessment of artistic merit or particulars of the proposed. if you have enough people, enthusiasm and cleverness, building a pile of dirt can turn into a fabulously interesting disaster, as we all know.

the voting is proving to be a very good tool for teasing out these projects which have a critical mass of people and excitement around them. voters are not simply chosing the big names and most audaciuos fire weenie. they are chosing the projects with a strong community around them, and the ones involving people that have proved themselves through lots of public doing.

in doing so, i find the voting to be impressively honing in on factors critical to successful burning man art. collaborative creative work, broadly defined, is our main vehicle towards community. and the voting seems to be well ranking projects by their potential for this sort of real community forming collaboration.

The Shipyard and Mobilization/F-Space hereby announce our annual summer picnic soiree- the "How to Destroy the Universe" festival (Part IV).

This year we have on bill, as usual, a gigantic Ontological disaster, setting up and knocking down the pins of Being (with a big "B") over two days and nights of curiously compelling mayhem.

The first day of the festival will be a show I've been wanting to do for three years, but have demurred on for various reasons at various times. We are finally saying "go" on this, but need many of you to join us to make it work. The show is called:

"RIGGED: An Arbitrary Assembly of Airborne Aesthetic Curiosities"

The notion is an event/exhibition where all the art is somehow up in the air. Everyone is invited to propose projects and performance ideas that are aerial in one manner or another. Open submission. Anything considered. Only rule is- nothing can touch the ground.

We will do lots of rigging with cables across the yard between container knuckles, making 17’ high hanging points. Things/people can climb on the sides of the containers. Mount things on tall poles. Things can be kinetic or be still. Fill the entire overhead space of the yard with aerial art and enjoy it / destroy it from below.

We might get things like larnie's bamboo birds. 1000 origami swans contending for airspace. Run scott flame tubes around the container top perimeter. Make an big ice teradactyl that drips big rocks as it melts. Have david apocalypse do his straight jacket escape hanging from the boom truck bucket, 40' in the air. Yet another Aesthetic Meat Front hook suspension. Zip line rockets. 100' long "violin" strings, played from below. Flying pigs, burning. Maybe a trapeze performance on the sides of the containers. An opera performance in the round on the tops of the containers. And i'm sure a bunch of other things i can't think of. Nay, we may even get a new and improved Ryon eye arch, but shhhhh . . .

I don't know. I just like the title of it. "rigged". It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Previous starts at this event have produced many installation and performance proposals. Hopefully those of you who were interested before are still interested. For we are now, in reality, not be altered, changed, folded, bent, spindled, vexed or mutilated, going to do this as announced- last weekend in June.

So please write me if you want to discuss making things for the show or helping to organize it. There is modest money available for installations and performances. Ask and you shall receive, most likely.

The second day of the HTDTU Festival will be more musically focused. More info to follow. The rigged day is likely mostly physical art. Both days should combine to create a good shaking of the seat.

This will be the main Shipyard show this summer. The Power Tool Drag Races have been moved to October for a variety of reasons. So other than the dirt rave in the desert, we hope your calendar is clear enough that you can join us to assemble some unusual curiosities, airborne in nature, late this coming June.

Thanks for considering.

Jim

Dear friends ,

Here is the link to the petition against the proposed Sempra coal
fired power plant that is planned to be located just outside Gerlach. It would be the largest coal-plant in the US, and it is the old dirty coal technology. It will essentially change the land out there forever if we don't act now and sign this petition!

The link will take you to the petition page which is part of a
very informative website that has been developed to inform the public about this coal plant, SIGN IT NOW!!

http://www.nevadacleanenergy.org/takeaction.html

Please pass this link on to your lists and anyone who can help stop this plant from going up...... Remember, the
plume from this plant would extend hundreds of miles into what is currently one of the most pristine areas in the continental US.

Here is a list of how it would effect the area:

The plant will release more than 50 dangerous pollutants, including arsenic, lead and mercury, into the air we breathe.

The power generated will be exported to Southern California, where the law prohibits this type of plant to be built.

Coal-fired plants are the nation’s largest source of mercury pollution, known to affect children’s learning abilities even with exposure to small amounts.

Clean alternatives are available that would cost the same and produce the same quantity of electricity.

The plant will consume 14.2 millions of gallons of scarce desert ground water every day—over 5 billion gallons a year—diverting water from plants and drinking holes relied upon by deer, elk and wild horses.

At more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty, the plant’s 650-foot tall smoke stack will tower over the desert landscape.

The plant’s coal burner emissions would be equivalent to adding about two million cars to the roadways.

During the five years of power plant construction, an estimated 100-200 trucks and 800 workers will congest normally quiet roadways daily.

Thank you and long live the Black Rock Desert,
Justin Credible

NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE PILE 'O PENNIES ART GRANT DISASTER
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The BORG2 Ad Hoc Action Collective, aka the people not voted into any kind of office, have been counting up all the change collected from the recent FLYING PIG SEX DISASTER fundraiser and rolling it into, well, rolls. And then depositing the rolls with the bank people. And now they're tired of all this rolling.

The delightful Marc came up with this idea (paraphrased for your convenience):

1. Gosh darn we still have to roll a ton of pennies 2. How can I convince someone else to do this?
3. Maybe the AC could GRANT this butt load of pennies to an artist so we won't have to roll them anymore and an artist could be supported to make their art, which is why we are here rolling all this god-forsaken change in the first place.

Thus was born: the NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE PILE 'O PENNIES ART GRANT DISASTER.

Here is the deal: BORG2 has a bunch of pennies and other misshapen but still legal US tender coins in its possession. Rather than spend about ten manhours each for every ten dollars of coins left, BORG2 is going to grant THIS HUGE PILE OF COINS TO ONE LUCKY ARTIST. An real art grant, immediate resource gratification, just like we've been talking about for the last six million years.

The rules and conditions:

- The dollar amount of the remaining pennies (and other coins) is somewhere around ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

- All those interested in receiving this grant have one week from today forward to submit a project proposal. Proposals will be posted publicly to the BORG2.org website in the order received.

- All submitted proposals will be subject to a vote by the entire BORG2 community, using the Demagogue voting software that was created by the mysterious Dr. Fiasco and used in the January elections, and is now new and improved, to the point where it can handle "millions of voters."

- The project deemed "most interesting" by the entire community, as determined through this vote, will receive all the remaining coins at a special ceremony, details of which to be announced.

Format of proposals:

The format used to submit a proposal is very important. Non-compliance with format will mark submitter as a non-linear thinker. Please comply with all following blank spaces:
Note that the primary vehicle for this application is DF1LM. Those who have been following the BORG2 tribe and various other tribes in the Outer BORGverse will know that DF1LM has, um, kinda become the communication medium of choice for BORG2 endeavors. In fact, the Art Council has been deep in debate as to whether all official AC communications should proceed through DF1LM, although there has been no decision yet. In the meantime, however, Jim composed a stunt grant application that found issue in several panties, and many DF1LMs flew here and there shortly thereafter, as well as before, through the rigors of time travel (news travels BEYOND FAST in the BORGverse). The record (or wreckage) can be found on the BORG2 tribe (borg2.tribe.net), and also on the DF1LM tribe (dfilm.tribe.net).

"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle -- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
(WWHD?:

It's important to follow protocol, especially when you're counting pennies. And why not?
Ben Franklin probably had something to say on the matter -- Ben had something to say for just about every goddamn thing, and that's why we put him on the flag. Not Nixon... he never did understand the worth of a penny, or much of anything else for that matter, at least anything decent or legal. Nixon threw his pennies into the trash, along with empty bottles of Old Grandad and Maalox and all the paper records from his orphan-purchase deal with the Chinese, and because of that he died homeless and penniless. They buried him in a cardboard box and tossed him on a junk freighter headed out to the Indian Ocean, which is exactly what he deserved, but that's beside the point: he didn't watch his pennies, and that's why we call it "penniless." Historians take note: dead presidents are amusing, but not nearly as funny as unshaven ones. Stand back!)
BORG2 AND THE NEW AMAZING TECHNICOLOR WEBSITE
---------------------------------------------

Up now for public review, comments, and criticism. Please do not direct your review, comments and/or criticism to this correspondent, who will lose it. Charlie Gadeken has asked the such comments be directed to: borg2.tribe.net/. Be nice to him when you do it, because he and the rest of the AC put a lot of time and effort into this while we sat back in our La-Z Boys and hollered at them for not having a website up.

Here is the temporary address for the new site:
http://66.216.120.27/index.php3

There is also a public wiki for BORG2 in the works, and it should break surface at any moment. More news as it comes off the wire.

FINAL TALLY FROM PIG DISASTER?
------------------------------

We appear to have a final score from the recent fundraiser, via the estimable G-Off, man on a mission:

$1,365 deposited today from the final rolling session $980 deposited by Nesdon a couple weeks ago $100 coinstarred by Nesdon a couple weeks ago $550 in pennies waiting for a winner (includes ones in Jim's trunk) Some other amount of rolled (and unrolled) coins that Jim still has in the trunk of his car.
-------
TOTAL COINS FROM PIG: $2,995 plus whatever is in the trunk.

So there you have it. Adding in the money raised at the door, through the bar take, schwag table, hyperwhiskey wheel, etc., the total is a little over $7000. Thanks again to everyone who donated or participated. A nice start. Who's next?

(WWHD?

Ye gads, more pennies! Who is "Jim" and why is he keeping Clearly Labeled Funds in his trunk? Thousands of coins... he'll wear out his shocks that way, and this is coming from someone who's destroyed many cars through creative overloading. The key is to balance the
load: torso and arms in the trunk, head and legs in the front seat, etc. -- drive slowly and don't look from side to side much, or at all really. Important not to alert the authorities that anything weird might be going on... or have I said too much? Ignore all that. Just pretend the leech isn't climbing up your back and keep typing, at all costs.
Can't reach it with my hands... need some sort of heavy type of swatter, with a long handle. Or perhaps something to just slow it down -- if I can keep it away from my central cortex I can keep working indefinitely, if not, perhaps, at _tip top condition_. It's worked for Dan Rather for many years, after all, and his leech is even bigger than mine.
You can't see it, of course, because it's on his back, and the TV cameras only show him from the front. Wisely, because no one wants to see a giant, blood-sucking leech on network television, unless that leech is George W. Bush. But he only makes prolonged appearances once per year, every year, and his people have plenty of time to disguise his leech as a harmless podium, or Dick Cheney.

When did this leech business begin? Am I the only one who sees them? Must study their
habits....)
THE ART COUNCIL SHOUTS THROUGH A BULLHORN
-----------------------------------------

Owing to technical difficulties, the minutes for last week's Art Council meeting are not available yet. The AC is working to make sure that the minutes are hereafter available to the public by Wednesday of the following week, so that they can be reported here in the Bullhorn.

Here are the previous week's minutes to tide you all over:

http://66.216.120.27/minutes.php3

CHICKEN JOHN FLEES TO MEXICO
----------------------------

(WWHD?

Let's get one thing straight. There's nothing shameful about hopping in a 55-foot GMC bus and heading for the border, especially when that bus is filled with women and alcohol.
Especially not when your name is Chicken John, and your whole life is a complex solution to an non-existent exercise in abstraction.

I knew of him once, back when he was cleaning booths at the old Regal Show World Theater in San Francisco. The Regal Show World, Where You Are King. And Chicken was king, after a fashion. No one cleared a booth faster than Chicken John Rinaldi. The strippers made fun of him, but the admiration from the clientele was palpable; no one put more into the job than that man. I was Night Manager at the O'Farrell Theater at the time and I wanted to hire him away from his current employers -- his skills were valuable within a certain sphere, and I was prepared to double or even triple his salary. But Chicken was a man of honor and refused to break his contract. That was the last time I ever saw him in person, and I shook his hand, even though I knew where that hand had been. But I've heard plenty about him since then.

The details are irrelevant. We can sit here and talk about the time he hijacked a van full of nuns and drove them to Disneyland, or the awful Backstreet Boys ticket counterfeiting scheme he got himself mixed up in -- but why bring up ugly incidents? I still believe he's a man of honor, and if he stole those people and drove them to Mexico, far from the reach of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, well, he probably had a good reason. Better to think of him down there on the beach in Baja, wearing baggy tourist shorts and some sort of phony nose and glasses contraption, probably, and walking with a fake limp, enjoying the fruits of his horrible misdeeds. And why not? Who else works this hard at being inscrutable?

We can only hope that -- when he finally tucks his tail between his legs and aims the bus homeward -- the US border people go easy on him. They're tall boys, and their fun, theoreticallly, at least, mostly comes from the opportunity to hit people in the kidneys with the long saps they're issued as standard equipment. But my money's on Chicken. No one's mouth works faster when it's about to get hit with a bully club than Chicken's, and the man has a long track record of jumping ship just when the rats start to chew through the hull... these are the kinds of skills that keep a man afloat in wicked times. Not the sort of things that are appreciated by most people, or discussed at all in polite company, but there is a certain kind of book where these deeds are noted and saluted: the ability to grow more lives than a cat is not something to scoff at or discount, and the people who get good at these things live to cause far more trouble for far longer than people who manage stay out of it entirely. Just look at me. Selah.)

BORG2 MAKES GOOD; LOCAL PRESS ECSTATIC
--------------------------------------

Another fine article by Steven "Scribe" Jones in the San Francisco Bay Guardian:

www.sfbg.com/39/19/news_burningman.html

I understand there was a photo that ran in the original print edition. And that this photo was uncredited, and that the photographer remains uncompensated.

Just saying.

(WWHD?

I wrote this when I was alive, stand by it still. A very long time indeed, considering that every day spent in the afterlife is infinite. No one tells you that before you pull the trigger, though, do they? After long consideration, being hooked up to tubes and spoonfed oatmeal would probably be preferable to watching Johnny Carson tell dick jokes for the rest of eternity. Somebody get me out of here, goddamnit.

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."

We were talking about the TV business, right? Wait. Jesus. Whoops -- you have to be careful when you say that around here.)

NEW JRS ANNOUNCEMENT TO NOT MENTION SHIT OR PANTS
-------------------------------------------------

After Chicken John's miserable failure with the first BORG2 announcement in the Jackrabbit Speaks (maybe that's why he ran off to Mexico,) we've been granted another shot at it.
After a laborious process of editing and passing from one committee to the next committee and back to the original author and then back through more committees, BORG2CO IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE LATEST RESULTS OF ITS MARKETING RESEARCH, DESIGNED TO OFFER YOU THE CONSUMER THE GRANDEST OF TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS RIGHT IN THE SAFETY AND COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME, keyed to Rapid Eye Movement studies conducted on federal prisoners, in accordance with state and federal law, and using Newtonian principles, NEW AND IMPROVED, no animals harmed in any way, TEETH BRIGHTER AND SHINIER, guaranteed to get you laid.

I would show it to you, but it doesn't officially exist yet. Look for it in a JRS coming to your mailbox soon.

SO MISCELLANEOUS IT HURTS
-------------------------

The Network Girl would like to direct your attention to:

The Grass-Rootin' BORG2 Artist Tribe
grassrootborg2artists.tribe.net/

"This tribe has been established to get WAY back to basics of art-making before there was Burning Man grants or BORG2 funding. Focusing on meeting the call for more art thru non-monetary resource funding i.e. stuff for free that will give your art project the Whoo hoo for no bling bling or at least very little. This is a place for BORG2 Artists and ALL artist for that matter to list their in-kind donation wish list. This is for the artists who plan to get their Art to Burning Man 2005 no matter what. This shout out is for you"

And Charles Gadeken would like to draw your attention to the BORG2 Art Council's plan to create mad money from the fundraising process:

Input and suggestions no doubt welcome.

PLEASE SEND ME INFORMATION. I can't do this without the people who read the thing.

You can also sign up for the tribe.net thingy at BORG2.tribe.net, where we talk about all sorts of stuff related to BORG2. This is probably the quickest way to receive information and inform others on topics related to BORG2.

"Please get me off this list as quickly as possible."

Ejection seat button:

2004 was the premiere year for the Miss Black Rock City Project, and what a year it was! We produced four events: The Sash Making Workshop, the Miss Illumination 2004 Special Event, and of course the Miss Black Rock City 2004 Preliminaries and Main Event.

I am so impressed by the dedication of all of the contestants - they all 'got it' and seemed to be having such a great time, as I know I was! This process has always been about them: the regions, installations, theme camps, projects and/or independent spirits they represent. The Miss Black Rock City 2004 main event had finalists from New York, Southern and Northern California, Virginia, Texas, Reno, Chicago, Toronto –and more!

Take a look around our site www.missblackrockcity.com for participant biographies, photos, stories of our past events, our theme song, 2004 thank yous, and other bits of anti-corporate beauty propaganda... Participation for all events is always open to all women and men of any (or no) sexual preference and/or identity. Anyone can enter - and anyone can win. Plastic surgery, an
eating disorder, Vaselined teeth and double-sided tape are not required!

In 2005 we hope to bring you Miss Flipside 2005 and of course we will be back for Miss Black Rock City 2005. Thanks to all who participated in 2004!

Here's my idea: Sometimes I make sculpture out of pennies and coins I smash up on the train tracks mixed with other metal and stuff...so...I would make a fountain out of scrap metal and some of the pennies and other found objects/recycled material/etc.(a wishing well really) that has flame effects in the center(would use my friend Argyre, who safety checks all the pyro artcars for DMV to make this safe and working)...the remaining pennies would be on hand to be used to grant peoples wishes. then after the event I would donate them on behalf of the borg2 to Make a Wish foundation

Here's where you come in: I need someone with better technological capabilities to collaborate with me to get my application in. You would need to make the DFilm(preferred) or a drawing of my idea.

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved

So in anger I challenged his right
for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Just for a moment I stood there In silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced
through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride
Just as fast as I could from the
West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone; in life nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death

I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet will find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's Cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me
I have to make it to Rosa's back door

Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I'm getting weary, unable to ride

But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest

From out of nowhere Felina has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss, then Felina good-bye
He's got a generator out of a 747 that he wants to get rid of for $200. It was rebuild before he bought it, should function, and is willing to throw in a trailer (missing an axel) to tow it around. It will need an engine to power it, and he's checking to see if he can get the sub-panel. It'll generate 90Kwatt(!!) - enough to power a small office building.

I can't store it, and I don't have the equipment/tools to make it function - but I would be willing to help if it will go toward community power at BB.

ELIZABETH MAY, leader of the SIERRA CLUB
MAY'S PROPOSAL
RE: FORTHCOMING BUSH VISIT TO CANADA:

Present Canada as a country in deep mourning -- in mourning for Margaret Hassan, for the innocent dead of Iraq, for the poor, for the environment he plans to butcher...for democracy, human rights and a respect for the dignity of each human being and life form on this sacred orb... Bush represents Death. We greet him by tying black crepe ribbons to everything in sight -- our front porches, our trees, our lamp posts... We can all wear black arm bands....
I think this is more FAb than "Abs" (that's Lady Merv elect: Art Council borg2), and suits a dual purpose even for American artists in general, and our mourning for the darkness and ignorance that covereth this country in pathetic patheticness...

I am setting here correcting a version of this Burn Toast announcement I just sent out, after one too many Margaritas . In the CD tray, Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani- Live playing "My Guitar Wants to Kill Yo Mama!" What a tune this is to type toast announcements to!

So on to the the meat of the subject,

Tickets, Hopefully some of you have
yours in your artsy little hands. If you placed an order last week
you should have your tickets by now. And if you do, please let us
know what you think of them. Runout, aka Runny, aka Ron Roach, did
the art work and Rubybluetoe, aka Ruben did the final set up and
print job. We thank them for all the work at cranking them out and
listening to me prodding them along in the process.

So where are we for ticket sales? As of 5pm the 10th of December we
are at 40 tickets or about 12 percent of the total tickets available
for sale. There is still plenty of time to buy yours. If you live in
Tucson Arizona you can always contact me by e-mail and meet me some
place to pay for them in person. Or you can come to the Holidaze
gathering in Phoenix on the 18th and pick them up there with cash,
check or money order. I will have only 50 tickets at Holidaze to
sell directly. This keeps them from being all sold at one place and
time to just the Azburners community. We want to keep this event
open to anyone in the global burner community. Evenly disbursed
ticket sales by mail and in person helps insure everyone has equal
access to tickets.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay area. Grover Davis will also
have them for sale in person. He can be reached by e-mail at
Grover@solocollective.org for details. He will not have tickets in
his hands until next weekend.

New for Toast 2005 is art grants for art that is brought and
displayed at this event. There will be more info on that in a few
weeks, as well as info on theme camp placement. Stay tuned for the
updates.
